Common Stamping Defects, Causes and Professional Solutions

Metal stamping manufacturing is the most widely used processing technology for hardware accessories. During high-volume stamping production, manufacturers often face unstable quality problems such as burrs, springback, cracking, wrinkling, dimensional deviation and surface deformation. Understanding the root causes and corresponding improvement solutions can greatly improve stamping yield, reduce production cost and stabilize batch quality of hardware stamping parts.

Burr defect is mainly caused by unreasonable die clearance, worn cutting edges and unqualified material hardness. When the stamping die clearance is too large or uneven, the sheet metal cannot be completely cut off, resulting in irregular fracture burrs. The effective solutions include regular die polishing, adjusting blanking clearance according to material thickness, replacing worn inserts, and adding oil lubrication during stamping process. Standard burr control can ensure smooth assembly, electroplating and surface treatment of hardware parts.

Springback is an unavoidable problem in bending and forming stamping. Material elasticity, bending angle, sheet thickness and die structure all lead to angle rebound and flatness deformation. To control stamping springback, manufacturers can adopt over-bending compensation, improve die pressing plate structure, increase material pre-pressure, and select suitable tensile materials. For high-precision hardware stamping parts, standardized springback data testing and die correction are necessary to ensure consistent dimensional accuracy in mass production.

Cracking and wrinkling usually occur in deep drawing and flanging processes. Cracking is caused by excessive material stretching, insufficient material flow and sharp corner radius. Wrinkling is caused by loose material accumulation and uneven pressing force. Practical solutions include increasing drawing fillet radius, adjusting blank holder pressure, optimizing stamping lubrication, and using graded drawing process. Reasonable process parameter adjustment can effectively eliminate forming defects and improve the overall qualification rate of hardware stamping products.
